Interlibrary loan's FAQ

  1. Faculty members and students of UPPA (from the third year of undergraduate studies onward) who  completed their library registration, as well as any external users who paid their library registration fees.

  2. Interlibrary loan requests are processed free of charge (regardless of the type of request), within the following limits:

    • Up to 10 requests per academic year for faculty and PhD students

    • Up to 5 requests per academic year for other users

    Beyond these limits, a flat fee of €20 is required, which grants 5 additional requests.

  3. Any document (book, journal article, thesis, or dissertation) can be requested through interlibrary loan, provided it is not available in print or electronic format at UPPA.
    Please consult the Primo catalogue and our electronic resources before submitting your request. 

  4. It means requesting a document or a copy of a document that is not held by UPPA libraries and is available in an external library outside the University.

  5. The answer is no — the following items cannot be requested through interlibrary loan :

    • Old, rare, damaged, or fragile materials, such as 19th-century books

    • Large-format works, such as multi-volume encyclopedias

    • Textbooks or reference works, including dictionaries, directories, etc.

    • Full copies of books or entire journal issues, for technical and legal reasons

     

  6. The lending library determines the consultation conditions: the document may be consulted on-site, at one of UPPA’s libraries, or at your home, depending on their policy..

  7. You can either submit your requests online (Article Request, Book or Thesis Request), contact the interlibrary loan office for your location (PEB-Pau or PEB-Côte Basque), or visit the front desk of your library.

  8. It all depends on how long the external library takes to process the request, as well as postal and internal processing times.

    For a document coming from a French university library, the usual processing time is between four and eight days.

  9. The interlibrary loan service will contact you as soon as possible upon receipt of the document (by phone or email). 

  10. Yes, shipping times are often longer than for a French library, and the cost is generally higher.

  11. An average loan period of 15 days to 1 month is generally granted by the lending library. In any case, the exact duration will be specified each time you come to collect a document.

  12. The lending library decides whether or not to grant a loan extension.
    If you need an extension, you must request it from your library’s interlibrary loan service at least one week before the due date. 

  13. Documents must be collected from the interlibrary loan office that you requested.

  14. You are responsible for any document borrowed, whether obtained through Interlibrary Loan or from a UPPA library. If there is any issue with your library account, please ensure that your situation is resolved beforehand.
